Quest for the Castle in the Stars
Sci-Fi City Based on Castle in the Sky

Summary

Our objective is to design an environment resembling the castle in the sky from Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky. As the title suggests, the goal is to redesign elements from Miyazaki’s original work as sci-fi elements, taking place in a post-apocalyptic/cyberpunk setting.

Castle Design

The castle in the original movie was depicted as a pristine setting, untouched by humans for extended periods of time. The only maintenance would be done by robots. The technology used within the castle would predictably provide great power and enlightenment, becoming a battleground for the factions who wish to control its power.

Updated Look

The castle could either be located in the sky, as per the original concept, or it could be a space station. It should look considerably more sterile than the rest of the environment, either with sleek white/greys, or dark with glowing accents. The shapes should either be strong, or organic/smooth. Inspirations can be drawn from Blade Runner, Borderlands, Elysium, Interstellar, 2001, or Tron Legacy.

Made a few rough 2D silhouettes to explore the shape design of our castle/space station.

Focused on sweeping, circular shapes from modern architecture and space stations irl.
